Auction generates savings of R$ 68.5 billion for energy consumers

The energy auction carried out by the Brazilian government on Wednesday 20 December had better results than expected, with a discount of 38.7%. For energy consumers, this means an economy of R$ 68.5 billion. For the country, the operation ensured R$ 13.94 billion in infrastructure investments.

According to Fernando Coelho Filho, Minister for Mines and Energy, the result of the auction is proof of how interested investors are in Brazil. During this auction alone, 63 energy generation enterprises were contracted. The average megawatt/hour price reached R$ 189.45, i.e., 38.7% below the price ceiling set for the tender.

Among the states to benefit from new enterprises, Piauí has the largest number of plants: 17 in total. It is followed by Rio Grande do Norte (12 plants), Paraíba (9 plants), Maranhão (4 plants), Bahia (4 plants), Pernambuco (3 plants), São Paulo (3 plants), Santa Catarina (2 plants), Rio Grande do Sul (2 plants), Rio de Janeiro (2 plants), and Minas Gerais (2 plants).
