Irrigation project ensures supply to countryside Bahia

Steps 1 and 2 of the project, inaugurated this Friday (23 March), will take water from the São Francisco to 16.5 thousand hectares of crops.

President Michel Temer attended the inauguration ceremony of the first two stages of the Baixio de Irecê Public Irrigation Project this Friday (23 March). In its initial phase, the enterprise is expected to generate 11,300 direct jobs and 14,000 indirect ones for the local population. The goal is to use water collected from the river over 42 kilometres of canal to bring irrigation to 16,500 hectares of crops.

The project is being developed by the São Francisco and Parnaíba Valley Development Company (Codevasf), which will also deliver seven other stages of the irrigation project. When the project is ready, the waters of the canal will serve 250,000 residents and supply water to cotton, sugarcane, fruit and vegetable farmers in the region. Read Full Article
