Unilever to buy Brazilian organic food business Mãe Terra

The Anglo-Dutch group said on Monday that is has agreed to acquire Brazilian natural and organic food business Mãe Terra for an undisclosed sum.

Unilever’s purchase of Mãe Terra, which makes everything from organic cereals, cookies and other snacks and is growing at over 30 per cent a year, marks the latest effort by the food and personal care behemoth to push into the organic foods business.

Unilever snapped up Sir Kensington’s, a maker of condiments, including vegan mayo, earlier this year and has also pushed into the organic meal kit market through its venture capital and private equity arm Unilever Ventures, that led a $9.2m funding round for Sun Basket. The Mãe Terra deal marked Unilever’s eighteenth M&A announcement since 2015.

“Mãe Terra has a great following in Brazil and strengthens our food portfolio, allowing us to accelerate our expansion in the high-growth naturals and organic segment,” Fernando Fernandez, president of Unilever Brazil, said.
