About the event

We celebrated Brazil’s Independence by having an in-depth discussion with Dr. Mark Hillary Hansen focusing on Dona Leopoldina’s specific role in the events of the Independence of Brazil, in 1822. Dr. Hansen also highlighted the importance of her high intellectual formation as a Habsburg princess, a tradition that was passed down to her granddaughter Princesa Isabel and contributed to the abolition of slavery. Having grown up in Brazil, Dr. Hansen has cultivated a lifelong passion for all things Brazilian. He earned a Ph.D. in History at Columbia University with a doctoral dissertation on Eduardo Prado (1860-1901) that cast a special light on Brazil’s unique monarchical heritage.
