A dedicated friend and longtime supporter of the Chamber, Mr. Rosenstein served as the Chamber’s Executive Director from November 2014 through March 2017. During his tenure, he drew upon his wealth of knowledge of Brazil and his international experience to guide the Chamber in strengthening its role as the leading business platform connecting Brazil and the United States. Born on April 1, 1946 in Hartford, CT, Mr. Rosenstein was educated at Harvard University, Sorbonne Université, and École Supérieure d’Interprètes et de Traducteurs. His international career included leadership roles in communications and public affairs at major institutions such as Banque Nationale de Paris, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Toyota Motor Europe, and Bentley Motors. As Executive Director of the Chamber, he worked tirelessly to strengthen the relationship between Brazil and the United States, expanding our community of members and partners, and championing initiatives that reflected his global vision and deep respect for both nations. Mr. Rosenstein’s passion for languages and culture was a defining aspect of his life. Fluent in Portuguese, French, and English – and conversational in Spanish – he brought his linguistic talents to both professional and personal pursuits. He was an accomplished interpreter, a scholar of ethnomusicology, and a devoted contributor to the arts and civic life in the Berkshires, particularly in Lenox, MA, where he spent his later years. Mr. Rosenstein is survived by his wife, Maria Carolina (Torres de Araujo) Rosenstein; son, Philip Rosenstein; sister, Alice Spatz; and brother-in-law, Dr. Lawrence Spatz. He was predeceased by his sister, Carol Gold. Mr. Rosenstein will be remembered not only for his many accomplishments, but also for the generosity, compassion, and integrity he brought to every interaction. Concealed among the rolling hills that separate the city of Poços de Caldas in southeastern Brazil from its smaller neighbor, Caldas, is a defunct uranium mine. Located on the rim of a 70-million-year-old volcanic crater, Poços de Caldas sits on promising deposits of the 17 chemical elements essential for 21st-century economies and warfare. They’ve become a point of focus for world powers, including President Donald Trump’s foreign policy interests, sparking a modern-day global “gold rush” for these critical minerals. Brazil is home to the world’s <a href="https://pubs.usgs.gov/periodicals/mcs2025/mcs2025-rare-earths.pdf" target="_blank">second-largest rare earth reserves</a>. It has the potential to become a major producer of these metals – and to offer the world an alternative to China, which currently dominates the supply chain. But it is keen to do so without repeating the extractive models of the past, which saw Brazil become a big exporter of raw materials and then lose out on the added value of processing them. “Brazil can be the next hub of rare earths from the West,” says Marcelo De Carvalho, executive director in Brazil of Meteoric Resources, one of two Australian companies that have acquired mining rights around Poços de Caldas and hope to start producing large quantities of mixed rare earth carbonate – the technical term for the minerals extracted from the clay – within the next two to three years. But Brazil also wants to develop its own downstream industry and the capacity to not just extract these strategic minerals, but also separate them and make them into magnets. Earlier this year, Brazil launched South America’s first rare earth magnet plant, called CIT SENAI ITR. In June, the Brazilian development bank BNDES included 10 rare earth projects in a $920 million <a href="https://agenciadenoticias.bndes.gov.br/industria/BNDES-e-Finep-concluem-avaliacao-de-propostas-de-chamada-publica-de-projetos-com-foco-em-minerais-estrategicos/" target="_blank">funding program</a> to develop critical minerals production. Meteoric Resources and Viridis are among the selected firms, both with pilot plans to develop separation technology.

Existing investors BBVA and General Atlantic also participated in the round, which follows the initial Series E funding completed in September 2024. Founded in 2016, Neon offers digital financial services including current accounts, credit cards, personal loans, and investment products to consumers in Brazil. The company stated that the new funding will support efforts to scale operations while maintaining a focus on profitability.Neon aims to continue serving Brazil’s working population, particularly lower-middle income groups, according to <a href="https://latamlist.com/neon-raises-129m-in-series-e-extension-round/" target="_blank">LatamList</a>. Key priorities include enhancing its Pix payment system capabilities, integrating Open Finance frameworks, and applying artificial intelligence to streamline processes. “In the face of macroeconomic uncertainty, we will take a cautious approach to growing our credit portfolio, with a focus on sustainable growth,” said Pedro Conrade, CEO of Neon. In 2024, Neon reported a 50% increase in revenue and achieved breakeven, ending the year with a profit in the final two months. Its credit portfolio now exceeds R$6 billion.

Statement on US Tariffs on Brazil


<figure><img src="http://13.216.16.25/api/files/60dc4542-376d-4364-94bd-2551e1ccff2b-brasil_lidera.png" /></figure> A América Latina ultrapassou pela primeira vez a marca de US$ 14 bilhões em investimentos em data centers, segundo dados apresentados por executivos do setor durante painel promovido pela Tech Capital, hoje, 3, em São Paulo, com o Brasil à frente no desenvolvimento de projetos. O volume se refere apenas à carga de TI operacional já instalada (1,2 gigawatts) e aos 260 megawatts atualmente em construção. O Brasil lidera esse crescimento, com destaque para a demanda por serviços de nuvem, interconexão local e uso intensivo de inteligência artificial (IA). Para Rafael Bomeny, CFO da Odata, a demanda por cloud computing ainda é o principal vetor de expansão, mas a IA tende a acelerar ainda mais o setor. Ele estima que, para cada dólar investido por operadores de data centers, clientes finais chegam a aplicar sete dólares em equipamentos. A pressão por baixa latência tem levado à descentralização dos investimentos, com novas regiões brasileiras ganhando protagonismo, como Fortaleza (CE) e o Rio Grande do Sul. Clayton Malheiros, CFO da Scala Data Centers, e Marcos Siqueira, CRO da Ascenty, destacaram a disponibilidade de energia como um diferencial competitivo do país. O Brasil conta com ampla matriz renovável – superior a 90% – e capacidade excedente de geração. Apesar disso, ambos apontaram gargalos na transmissão e na demora de 9 a 14 meses para aprovações regulatórias por parte do Ministério de Minas e Energia e do ONS.<h2>Tributos e financiamento limitam expansão</h2>O alto custo do capital no Brasil foi identificado como principal barreira ao avanço de novos projetos. Alessandro Lombardi, chairman da Elea Data Centers, afirmou que os encargos de importação de equipamentos de TI podem ultrapassar 50%, tornando o país “um dos mais caros do mundo” para operar data centers. Segundo ele, “não há como financiar crescimento com taxa básica de juros acima de 15%”.<h2>América Latina em transformação</h2>Chile e México também foram destacados como polos emergentes. O México, por sua proximidade com os EUA e crescente infraestrutura de backbones, tem atraído operadores globais. Brazil is striving to maintain ambition to curb emissions as it prepares to host the next round of global <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/" target="_blank">climate talks</a> in the Amazonian city of Belem in November. Unlike traditional forest protection projects proposed by private landowners, Piaui is focusing on public sector efforts that include government and local communities and cover a much bigger area to try to avoid simply displacing the location of deforestation. Similar projects, known as jurisdictional, are under development in the states of Tocantins and Para. Under an agreement announced on Tuesday, Investe Piaui, the state’s mixed economy company, has signed a deal with investment firm Silvania that will provide 10-20 million reais ($3.69 million) to help develop the programme. Brazilian firm Systemica will also help with the technical aspects of the programme and Silvania will act as an offtaker of the credits. Environmental services company Geonoma will lead the programme’s development. The group said that, if Piaui cuts deforestation by 10% year-on-year, it could generate more than 20 million credits by 2030 to sell to companies and countries to help them meet their own emission reduction targets.

The UN Charter turns 80

However, this expansion could be far greater if Brazil pushed forward with structural reforms, said Goldman Sachs executives during a visit to the country last week. In an interview with Valor, Richard Gnodde, vice chairman of Goldman Sachs, and Kunal Shah, co-CEO of Goldman Sachs International and co-head of the firm’s Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities (FICC) division, said Brazil has returned to the radar of foreign investors. This can be seen in the inflow of international funds into the local stock market. Still, the high level of interest rates remains a concern, as it continues to burden Brazilian companies. “I think Brazil’s remaining advantage is growth. The economy could double or triple over time. The right structural reforms would help unlock that growth. For me, that’s the most important thing—growth would allow the country to overcome its fiscal challenges. Not every economy has this opportunity,” Mr. Gnodde said. “Growing 2.3% in a still very challenging macro environment shows the strength of the private sector,” added Mr. Shah, who visited Brazil for the seventh time and gave his first interview to a Brazilian media outlet. Brazilian economic challenges, its companies and sectors, and the ups and downs of the local economy are well known to international investors, Mr. Shah said. “Right now, they are beginning to allocate funds back to Brazil. Part of that is due to macro fundamentals. Interest rates are very high while inflation is falling. The latest inflation reading came in below market expectations. So, when you look at real interest rates, Brazil has one of the highest among major global economies. And with a relatively stable currency, that’s usually a good signal for the exchange rate and fixed income flows. It also boosts confidence,” he said. He added that equity investors and others willing to take on currency risk are likely to follow—something already being observed. <h2>Fiscal limits</h2>Mr. Shah said Brazil’s fiscal situation may have reached a limit, requiring a shift to avoid recessionary or unstable fiscal scenarios. “That’s where checks and balances kick in, and you start to see the cycle reverse. I think that’s why optimism is growing — because certain limits are being reached,” he said. Still, he warned there are many questions about when there will be room for interest rate cuts. “While high rates are good for capital inflows, they place a huge burden on companies and the economy. It’s impressive how resilient the economy has been, and how growth remains strong even with such high rates. Our forecast for Brazil is 2.3% growth—above consensus. This cycle is lasting longer than many expected. Part of it is due to still-high fiscal spending, which worries investors,” Mr. Shah noted. The operation strengthens the Institutional Reforms Program for Competitiveness and Business Improvement, in partnership with the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services. With financing of $100 million, or approximately R$ 560 million, in the form of a policy-based loan (PBL), the program aims to consolidate progress made in this area and promote the medium- and long-term sustainability of reforms that reduce transactional costs for the private sector in the country. Expected results of the program by 2027 include strengthening institutional capacity for regulatory policy; increasing deposits and reducing processing time for patents; reducing the number of import licenses and processing times through the New Import Process of the Single Foreign Trade Portal Program; as well as increasing credit for MSMEs, women-led exporting companies, and the number of verified sustainable infrastructure projects. O movimento faz parte de uma estratégia global da Visa de se transformar numa empresa de tecnologia de movimentação financeira, indo além dos cartões de crédito e débito. Batizada de Visa Conecta, a nova empresa será uma instituição de pagamentos e, inicialmente, vai operar apenas como um ‘iniciador de pagamentos’ do PIX. Em novembro passado, a Visa já pediu a licença de ITP junto ao Banco Central, e a expectativa é que ela saia até novembro deste ano. A decisão de entrar nesse mercado teve a ver com o lançamento pelo Banco Central, em 28 de fevereiro, da jornada de pagamento do PIX sem redirecionamento — o que vai permitir pagar com o PIX nos ecommerces com apenas um clique. Hoje, para um cliente fazer uma compra no PIX numa loja virtual ele precisa copiar o código ou escanear um QR Code, tendo que entrar no aplicativo do banco para efetuar a transação. Na jornada sem redirecionamento, ele vai conseguir fazer a compra com apenas um clique, sem sair do ecommerce — contanto que já tenha vinculado sua conta bancária àquela loja. Essa vinculação é operacionalizada pelas ‘iniciadoras de pagamentos’, que passam a receber um fee sobre cada transação por esse serviço. Suzano will acquire a 51 percent interest in the new entity, with Kimberly-Clark holding a 49 percent interest. Suzano will pay Kimberly-Clark US$1.734 billion in cash for its 51 percent stake at the closing of the transaction, subject to certain customary post-closing purchase price adjustments. Closing of the transaction is contingent on, among other things, approval by regulatory and other governmental authorities, fulfillment of customary conditions precedent for transactions of this nature, and completion by Kimberly-Clark of a corporate reorganization of its Consumer Tissue and Professional business unit. The transaction is expected to close in mid-2026 and involves approximately 9,000 employees. A expectativa do levantamento é de 5,44%, abaixo do que foi projetado na semana anterior, de 5,46%. Já para 2026, a alta dos preços foi mantida em 4,50%. Ambas ainda estão acima dos 3% definidos como meta pelo BC, mesmo com a margem de erro de 1,5 pontos percentual para cima ou para baixo. A pesquisa semanal com uma centena de economistas mostrou ainda a previsão de que o Produto Interno Brasileiro (PIB) subirá 2,18% neste ano, acima da projeção de crescimento de 2,13% semana anterior. Para 2026, a expectativa para a expansão econômica teve ligeiro aumento de 1,80% para 1,81%. Sobre a política monetária do BC, houve manutenção na expectativa para a taxa básica de juros neste ano e no próximo. A mediana das projeções para a Selic ao final de 2025 é de 14,75%, enquanto para o término de 2026, a previsão é de que a taxa atinja 12,50%, no que foi a 19ª semana consecutiva de manutenção desse patamar. No momento, a Selic se encontra em 14,75% ao ano. No Focus desta segunda, houve ainda manutenção na expectativa para o preço do dólar no final de 2025, a R$ 5,80, e leve redução na projeção para 2026, a R$ 5,89, ante R$5,90 há uma semana. A divisa americana acumula queda ante o real de 9,8% neste ano, em movimento puxado por um processo de correção de preço, após sua disparada no fim do ano passado, e maior incerteza em relação aos planos tarifários dos Estados Unidos. Durante a abertura da Febraban Tech 2025, realizada nesta terça-feira, 10, eles enfatizaram a necessidade de um diálogo construtivo para evitar medidas prejudiciais e garantir um equilíbrio fiscal sustentável. Em relação à política fiscal, Marcelo Noronha, CEO do Bradesco, reiterou que o banco sempre defendeu que o debate sobre o IOF deve focar no equilíbrio das despesas e não apenas na receita. “Nós não simplesmente criticamos, mas tentamos influenciar positivamente em prol da nossa sociedade”, disse Noronha, destacando a postura construtiva dos bancos no diálogo com o Congresso Nacional e o Poder Executivo. Roberto Sallouti, CEO do BTG Pactual (mesmo grupo controlador da EXAME), seguiu a mesma linha, enfatizando que é inevitável que o Brasil revise sua estrutura de despesas orçamentárias. “Se isso não ocorrer, o arcabouço fiscal vigente não será sustentável a partir de 2026, resultando em maior ineficiência e aumento do custo Brasil”, alertou Sallouti. O executivo também provocou: “Se sabemos que isso é inevitável, por que estamos esperando?” Sallouti ainda fez uma analogia com as empresas, afirmando que, assim como no setor privado, o governo também precisa revisar suas despesas e buscar eficiência. “O governo tem o privilégio de ser um monopólio de tributar, mas até nisso esse monopólio acaba não funcionando, pois a sociedade reage”, completou. Milton Maluhy, presidente do Itaú, convidou todos a somarem forças por um país melhor, destacando a importância de um trabalho ético e responsável. “Deixe a polarização de lado e foque no que é melhor para o país”, concluiu Maluhy. Mario Leão, presidente do Santander, também destacou a importância de transformar os debates sobre equilíbrio fiscal em reformas estruturantes, com evolução significativa a partir de 2026. “O sistema financeiro tem um papel importante nesse debate e tem sido proativo”, disse Leão.<h2>Avanços em inteligência artificial e produtividade</h2>Durante o painel de abertura, o Itaú apresentou a ferramenta lançada neste mês, a “Inteligência de Investimentos Itaú”, uma solução de inteligência artificial generativa que atua como um “assessor de investimentos digital”, com foco em proporcionar uma experiência hiperpersonalizada aos clientes. O banco também revelou que mais de 12 milhões de clientes já migraram para o One Itaú, o super app da instituição, que centraliza todos os serviços bancários em um único aplicativo. A medida teve um impacto positivo no NPS, métrica usada para medir a satisfação e a lealdade dos clientes, que aumentou em 85%. O Bradesco também apresentou avanços em inteligência de dados, com a criação da Bradesco Inteligência de Dados Genérica (Bridge), que oferece 200 experiências internas, incluindo feedback diário por IA na área de cobrança para otimizar a performance dos funcionários. O BTG Pactual destacou que a inteligência artificial foi fundamental para ganhos de produtividade, especialmente em atendimento ao cliente, com 75% de ganho nesse sentido e 30% em aumento de programação. A aplicação da IA também tem sido estendida para marketing, personalização de ofertas, concessão de crédito e prevenção de fraudes. Tarciana Medeiros, presidente do Banco do Brasil, afirmou que, além de digitalizar todos os processos bancários a curto prazo, o banco está trabalhando para combinar inteligência artificial com computação quântica a longo prazo. Isso permitirá adaptar o portfólio em tempo real, além de usar modelos de QML (Qualidade da Métrica de Liquidez) para melhorar a eficiência operacional. De janeiro a abril de 2025, o Brasil exportou US$ 28,5 bilhões em mercadorias para a China. No mesmo período do ano passado, o montante havia sido de US$ 32,3 bilhões, uma queda de 12,2%. Ao mesmo tempo, as exportações para os Estados Unidos subiram 3,7% no período. As exportações brasileiras para os americanos somaram US$ 13,1 bilhões, e as altas mais fortes foram de carne bovina, café e suco de laranja. O começo do ano foi marcado pela imposição de novas tarifas de importação pelos EUA. O presidente Donald Trump anunciou taxas de 10% para quase todos os produtos brasileiros, que passaram a valer em abril. Aço, alumínio e automóveis foram taxados em 25%. Apesar das novas taxas, as importações brasileiras para os EUA cresceram. Uma das causas apontadas para isso é a de antecipação de importações. “Compradores estavam temerosos de um aumento de tarifa e adiantaram a importação, mas é um efeito muito pequeno ainda. Nós vamos sentir mais efeito a partir de julho e agosto”, diz Barral. Na lista de maiores importações, houve destaque para a carne bovina, que teve alta de 1.006% no valor total exportado. Em abril de 2024, o Brasil havia vendido US$ 21 milhões em carne. No mês passado, foram US$ 229 milhões. “Os Estados Unidos estão com uma necessidade de compra de carne sem precedentes. Houve redução de rebanho para a pior posição desde os anos 1950. Eles precisam de muita carne e estão fazendo incursões aqui no mercado brasileiro”, diz Fernando Iglesias, analista da consultoria Safras &amp; Mercado. “Recuperar rebanho não é uma coisa que acontece rapidamente. Essa tendência de ritmo de compra dos Estados Unidos no Brasil deve se manter”, afirma. Presidido por Jacyr Costa, o Cosag reuniu, na segunda-feira (2/6), autoridades e especialistas para debater o papel que a Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre Mudança do Clima 2025, que acontece em Belém, entre os dias 10 e 21 de novembro, pode ter como instrumento de valorização do agronegócio brasileiro. Gross domestic product in Latin America's largest economy rose 1.4% in the January-to-March period from the previous quarter, government statistics agency IBGE said on Friday, in line with the forecast in a Reuters <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/brazils-economy-projected-have-resumed-strong-run-first-quarter-2025-05-29/" target="_blank">poll</a> of economists. That marked a sharp acceleration from a weaker than expected end to 2024. IBGE revised fourth-quarter growth down to 0.1% from a previously reported 0.2%. XP economist Rodolfo Margato said that beyond the expected boost from agriculture, data showed resilient domestic demand, supported by favorable trends in employment, income and credit. As a result, he said he expected to raise his 2025 GDP growth forecast from 2.3%. "We expect a new wave of upward revisions from the market. In our case, we were already more optimistic, but our view may now move closer to 2.5%," said Margato. William Jackson, chief emerging markets economist at Capital Economics, said Brazil's economy was on track to grow about 2.3% this year, up from his previous forecast of 1.8%. Brazil’s planned electricity auctions in 2025 could drive between R$47 billion and R$57 billion in investments, according to a study by the Energy Research Company (EPE), an agency linked to the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), commissioned by Valor. The estimate includes R$45 billion to R$50 billion in generation projects and R$7.6 billion in transmission infrastructure. A COP30, maior evento global sobre mudanças climáticas, que será sediado em Belém, no Pará, em 2025, pode ser uma vitrine para que o Brasil mostre seu protagonismo na transição energética para uma economia de baixo carbono, segundo apontam especialistas ouvidos pela CNN. O incentivo econômico gerado pelo mercado de baixo carbono pode ser uma peça estratégica para que o país se adeque ao maior imperativo do século XXI: a descarbonização da economia. <h3>Brasil como Exemplo</h3>Após a sanção da lei que regulamenta o mercado aqui no Brasil, aprovada no final de 2024, o setor passou a ter regras mais claras. Na prática, a regulamentação determina que empresas responsáveis por lançar gás carbono em grandes quantidades na atmosfera devem compensar suas emissões e incentiva quem gera créditos a preservar e manter áreas verdes. Para Rita Ferrão, presidente da ABCarbon, o marco regulatório abre espaço para que o Brasil seja um grande player nesse mercado. Isso porque isso atrai segurança jurídica para negociações e as atenções de líderes internacionais para o modelo sustentável que o país pode vir a desenvolver. O crédito de carbono ao qual o professor se refere é um papel que comprova que uma empresa investiu em uma iniciativa que permitiu a redução de emissões de carbono ou ajudou a capturar parte delas. Projetos originados a partir da compra de um crédito de carbono seriam, por exemplo, o reflorestamento de um área desmatada ou a adoção de fontes renováveis de energia. Nesse aspecto, o Brasil possui um território propício para que projetos ligados ao mercado se desenvolvam, visto que o país possui grande biodiversidade e quase metade da sua matriz energética é composta por fontes renováveis. The early negotiations, called the Pre-COP, will take place in Brasilia, the nation’s capital, on Oct. 14 and 15, he said. Despite being a much smaller event, with only the main negotiators, the Pre-COP has gained importance this year because countries are struggling to deliver their new pledges to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). So far, more than 90% of countries have failed to meet the February deadline for submitting their new NDCs, as the world has turned its attention to wars and trade disputes, and financing for climate projects has dried up. Global Eggs is based in Luxembourg and also operates Granja Faria in Brazil. March 24 (Reuters) – The U.S. has almost doubled imports of Brazilian eggs once used only for pet food and is considering relaxing regulations for eggs laid by chickens raised for meat, as President Donald Trump’s administration seeks to bring down sky-high prices spiked by bird flu. While none of the Brazilian or broiler chicken eggs would wind up on grocery shelves, they could be used in processed foods such as cake mixes, ice cream or salad dressing, freeing up more fresh eggs for shoppers. Allowing use of broiler chicken eggs would require changing regulations, and some food safety experts warned that this could risk tainting food products with harmful bacteria. Nationwide economic strain persists from the virus that has wiped out nearly 170 million chickens, turkeys and other birds since early 2022. Grocery shoppers peruse thinly stocked shelves, restaurants have raised menu prices, and wholesale egg prices surged 53.6% in February before easing a bit in March. The egg shortage has fueled food inflation even as Trump’s trade disputes have threatened to disrupt supply chains and raise costs for fresh produce and other goods. In February, the administration announced a $1 billion plan to lower egg prices, which includes helping farmers prevent the spread of the virus and researching vaccine options. Andean American Associations to Host Webinar on Latin America's Future Under the New U.S. Administration

SAO PAULO, March 20 (Reuters) – Four Brazilian organizations on Thursday launched a fund aiming to raise 1 billion reais ($176 million) by 2030 for loans to small cocoa growers in the South American country to assist in expanding their operations. The Kawa fund, launched by the philanthropic Arapyau Institute, investment platform Violet, advocacy group Taboa, and impact investor MOV Investments, will initially lend some 30 million reais to 1,200 small-scale producers in the states of Bahia and Para. Traditionally, these producers have struggled to access credit for their operations or the know-how to improve productivity, Vinicius Ahmar, Arapyau Institute’s bio-economy manager, told Reuters on the sidelines of the World Cocoa Foundation’s meeting in Sao Paulo on Wednesday. “Most of the production is in the hands of small producers and producers on small holdings … in which they are unable to invest and they do not have access to technical assistance,” Ahmar said. The fund’s launch comes at a critical time for the industry, as top producers Ivory Coast and Ghana have suffered crop losses due to adverse weather, bean disease, smuggling and reduced plantations in favor of illegal gold mining, sending cocoa prices upward. Brazil’s cocoa production also fell nearly 20% last year and 2025 is shaping up to be “challenging,” the head of the Brazilian Association of Cocoa Processing Industries, Anna Paula Losi, told Reuters separately at the event. The Kawa fund will give cocoa farmers three years to pay back the loans, with an average six-month grace period, according to a statement announcing the new fund. The loans – typically used to buy fertilizer, irrigation and equipment – will charge 12% interest per year. In Brazil, 85% of cocoa producers are on the margins of the country’s financial system and struggle to access loans, the statement said, citing the country’s Agriculture Ministry. With some 80% of Brazil’s cocoa production coming from small-scale farmers, the combination leads to low income and low productivity, the statement said. The loans are exclusively intended for producers using agroforestry methods, the statement said, adding this will encourage forest conservation and regeneration. After receiving a fellowship from UNESCO to conduct fieldwork in West Africa in 1967, Didi and the anthropologist Juana Elbein dos Santos, his wife, organized the exhibition Afro-Brazilian Art, which was presented in Lagos, Accra, Dakar, Paris, London, and Buenos Aires between 1968 and 1974 and included Didi’s work. Since the 1980s Didi has been included in landmark exhibitions such as A Mão Afro-Brasileira [The Afro-Brazilian Hand] at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) in 1988; Art in Latin America at the Hayward Gallery, London, in 1989; Magiciens de la Terre [Magicians of the Earth], Centre Pompidou, Paris, in 1989; the 23rd International Biennial of São Paulo, in 1996, with a solo presentation; and Afro-Atlantic Histories, MASP, in 2018. No Brasil, a geração hidrelétrica praticamente coincide com o desenvolvimento dos sistemas elétricos por Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse e Nikola Tesla. Hoje, o Brasil possui uma capacidade hidrelétrica de cerca de 108 gigawatts (GW). Esta tecnologia é conhecida pela maturidade e longa vida útil de estruturas, especialmente barragens. No entanto, assim como um carro com 20 anos de uso não tem o mesmo desempenho de um veículo novo, há uma queda no rendimento das usinas com o tempo. O tempo também traz a inovação tecnológica e a mudança da dinâmica do setor elétrico, que representam relevante oportunidade de melhoria dos aproveitamentos hidrelétricos. Investimentos podem garantir vida útil adicional de muitas décadas, mantendo elevada qualidade de operação dessas usinas. Este potencial passa a ser ainda mais interessante no atual cenário de expansão do Sistema Interligado Nacional (SIN), em que a demanda de energia tem sido atendida de forma diversa, com destaque para eólicas e solares fotovoltaicas. Com o aumento da participação destas fontes, cuja produção de energia não é controlável, o sistema passa a demandar mais recursos gerenciáveis e confiáveis, capazes de prover serviços como capacidade de ponta e flexibilidade operacional. Como as hidrelétricas são os provedores naturais destes serviços, os investimentos em hidrelétricas existentes capazes de ampliar a capacidade produtiva se apresentam como uma excelente solução em condições altamente competitivas. No entanto, o setor elétrico ainda carece de mecanismos que viabilizem tais investimentos, uma vez que o preço horário da energia ainda não sinaliza adequadamente essas necessidades. Além disso, os atuais mecanismos de remuneração de outros serviços não oferecem sinais econômicos suficientes para viabilizar esses investimentos. After he was abducted by military operatives in 1971 and never returned, Paiva was left to care for their five children as she sought justice for her husband. CHICAGO, Feb 18 (Reuters) – A discussion about global soybean exports cannot proceed without mention of Brazil or the United States, because together they fuel 85% of total shipments each year. Likewise, “China” and “imports” are often synonymous in global soybean trade because the country accounts for more than 60% of annual imports. But what about the other customers? Who takes in the other 40% of soy cargoes, and how have these trends changed in recent years, especially with respect to each supplier? This conversation has been pulled to the forefront of the market as the United States has threatened tariffs on many of its trade partners, who are contemplating measures of their own. This includes both Mexico and European Union countries, top destinations for U.S. farm goods. At the same time, Brazil’s ballooning soybean crop has been increasingly able to supply global needs, slowly chipping away at U.S. soy exporters’ relevance.<h2>Quick China Recap</h2>China significantly reduced its reliance on U.S. soybeans during the first trade war in 2018, though that was largely possible at the time because of widespread disease throughout its hog herd, which significantly dented feed demand. But for U.S. exporters, the pre-trade war levels were never restored, and U.S. soy shipments to China over the last three calendar years have fallen 12% from the 2015-2017 average. China increased its imports by 13% during that time. Also during this time, Brazil expanded its soy exports to China by 51%, less than the 61% rise in the country’s total shipments. By comparison, U.S. soy exports to all destinations declined 2% in the same period as the focus on domestic demand increased. On average over the last three years, about 72% of Brazil’s soy exports headed to China, compared with 76% between 2015-2017. This huge dependence on a single customer is perhaps the biggest vulnerability of Brazil’s export program. About 53% of U.S. soy exports were destined for China over the last three calendar years compared with a three-year, pre-trade-war average of 59%. Total Brazilian soy exports are nearly 80% larger by volume than their U.S. counterparts, but both countries over the last three years exported similar volumes to destinations other than China and the EU. This relatively greater diversity among the United States’ customers might be its only present advantage over Brazil’s booming business. The future of U.S. soy exports could become less worrisome if domestic demand were to escalate in a manner implied by the aggressive biofuel mandates floated a few years ago. But those plans, much like the tariff discussions, are in a holding pattern for now. This means that if the upcoming U.S. soy crop is not sufficiently large, next season’s shipments could be squeezed further. Karen Braun is a market analyst for Reuters. O Brasil vai processar mais soja do que o esperado neste ano, com impulso de uma maior exportação de farelo e óleo de soja, apontou nesta quarta-feira (12) levantamento mensal da Abiove (Associação Brasileira das Indústrias de Óleos Vegetais). O processamento de soja no país foi previsto em 57,5 milhões de toneladas em 2025, 400 mil toneladas acima da previsão de janeiro, segundo a associação que reúne tradings e processadoras. A entidade ainda manteve a estimativa de colheita de soja do país neste ano em recorde de 171,7 milhões de toneladas. Já a exportação brasileira de farelo de soja foi prevista em 23,6 milhões de toneladas neste ano, acima das 22,9 milhões de toneladas previstas em janeiro. A exportação de óleo de soja do Brasil foi estimada em 1,1 milhão de toneladas, leve alta na comparação com a previsão de janeiro (1,05 milhão). A Abiove, por outro lado, manteve a estimativa de exportação de soja em grão em um recorde de 106,1 milhões de toneladas. A safra, que está sendo colhida, deverá ter um crescimento de 11,86% na comparação com a temporada anterior, atingida por problemas climáticos, segundo dados da associação. Já a exportação do grão aumentaria mais de 7%. O processamento, por sua vez, cresceria 3,8%, de acordo com dados da Abiove. Com um maior processamento e previsão de safra estável, a Abiove reduziu a projeção de estoques finais de soja do Brasil em 2025 para 8,96 milhões de toneladas, 800 mil toneladas abaixo da projeção de janeiro, levando também em conta um ajuste nos estoques iniciais deste ano.

<h2>SAO PAULO, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Brazil's jobless rate came in slightly above market expectations in the final quarter of 2024 but reached its lowest yearly average for the current data series after the labor market showed continued resilience throughout last year.</h2>Unemployment in Latin America's largest economy hit 6.2% in the three months through December, statistics agency IBGE said on Friday, up from 6.1% in the previous rolling quarter and above the 6.1% expected in a Reuters poll of economists. The average unemployment rate in 2024, however, was 6.6%, the lowest level since the beginning of the data series in 2012. Brazil's jobless rate has been hovering around historically low levels for the past few quarters, an indicator cheered by the government but that has contributed to the central bank hiking interest rates. "In our view, the job market will remain heated and Brazil is expected to maintain an unemployment rate close to 6% at the end of this year and the next - a very low level by our historical standards," C6 Bank economist Claudia Moreno said. The strong job market with high wages has supported economic growth, fueling the consumption of goods and services, but triggered inflationary concerns as consumer prices remain above the central bank's 3% target. On Wednesday, the monetary authority raised interest rates by 100 basis points to 13.25% and kept its guidance for another hike of that size in March, leaving the door open for subsequent moves. Despite the slightly higher-than-expected jobless rate in the fourth quarter, adding to separate data that on Thursday showed that Brazil created fewer formal jobs than forecast in December, the bank's stance should not change in the short term. Born on February 11, 1942, Mr. Stebbings earned a BA from Stanford University, a JD from Columbia University, and an MBA. He was an accomplished lawyer with expertise in international business and Latin America markets – and was active for decades with both Brazilian clients and international clients with business in Brazil. He applied his extensive knowledge at numerous law firms including Davis Polk &amp; Wardwell LLP; Rogers &amp; Wells LLP (now Clifford Chance LLP), where he served as Chairman of the Latin America Practice Group; and smaller international firms. Among his professional achievements, he helped establish Petrobras’ IPO on the New York Stock Exchange. He also dedicated time to pro bono endeavors, including for the Business Council for International Understanding, where he served as General Counsel and Executive Committee member. Mr. Stebbings was a guest lecturer at Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina (1972-74). He authored numerous publications, including on international trade law and trade developments affecting Brazil, as well as financial resources for Brazilian companies. He was a member of the New York State Bar Association, the State Bar of California, the American Bar Association, and the American Foreign Law Association – and spoke English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. Mr. Stebbings’ dedication to the Chamber strengthened ties between Brazil and the United States and furthered the Chamber’s mission of promoting trade and investment between the two nations. Mr. Stebbings is survived by his son, Matias Stebbings, and his grandsons, Vicente Stebbings and Andrés Stebbings. Born on December 4, 1930 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Mr. Pimenta joined the Merchant Marine Academy in Rio de Janeiro and graduated with honors. He was selected to join Brazilian shipping company Lloyd Brasileiro, where he rose the ranks and was promoted to captain. He commanded several ships and played an important role in Brazilian foreign trade. In 1970, he was assigned as Deputy Head of the New York Office, a role in which he coordinated shipping trade with other countries. Later, he was promoted to Head of the New York Office, where he remained until retirement. Mr. Pimenta was an important and dedicated Director and member of the Chamber, regularly participating in activities and attending events and programs. He greatly contributed to the Brazil Independence Day Reception and was integral to the planning of the Person of the Year Awards Gala Dinner. Even in recent years, following his relocation to Bluffton, South Carolina, he would return to New York to contribute to many successful POY events. Recognizing his great dedication to Brazil-US relations, Mr. Pimenta was honored with several awards from the Federal Government of Brazil as well as the Brazilian military. Mr. Pimenta’s dedication to the Chamber strengthened ties between Brazil and the United States and furthered the Chamber’s mission of promoting trade and investment between the two nations. Moreover, Mr. Pimenta was a close friend to all. His wit, wisdom, and kindness were unmatched and his presence and humor will be greatly missed. Mr. Pimenta is survived by his wife, Maria Helena Pimenta; his sons, Fernando Pimenta, Paulo Pimenta, and Lucio Pimenta, Jr.; and his grandchildren.

Os especialistas internacionais são acompanhados por técnicos dos governos do Brasil, do estado e municipal, em reuniões de campo para conhecer a infraestrutura hoteleira, planos de logística de transportes, segurança pública e saúde pública. A Secretaria das Nações Unidas para a Mudança do Clima (UNFCCC, da sigla em inglês) é responsável pelas negociações para a realização das Conferências. A secretária-executiva adjunta, Noura Hamladji, destacou que o evento é um grande desafio político e diplomático para enfrentar a crise climática. "Não somos uma missão de avaliação, somos uma missão que tem um objetivo bem claro: tornar a COP em Belém um sucesso. Estamos muito positivamente impressionados com as apresentações que vimos e com a preparação antecipada do Brasil", afirmou Hamladji. O secretário extraordinário para a COP30, Valter Correia, apresentou os números e frentes de trabalho que estão sendo encaminhadas pelo Governo Federal na construção do local do evento, na saúde, nos transportes, em acomodações e na segurança. "Estamos trabalhando incessantemente para entregar uma COP que tenha todas as condições de garantir o sucesso das negociações globais sobre o clima", afirmou. Este foi o segundo melhor desempenho já registrado na série histórica. A redução de 5,2% no índice de preços internacionais foi parcialmente compensada pelo aumento de 5,2% no volume exportado. Os principais setores responsáveis por esse desempenho foram o complexo soja (US$ 52,19 bilhões ou R$317,4), carnes (US$ 23,93 bilhões ou R$ 145,5 bilhões) e o complexo sucroalcooleiro (US$ 18,27 bilhões ou R$ 111,1), que juntos responderam por mais de 60% do total exportado. Apesar de uma redução de 18,7%, o complexo soja manteve sua posição de destaque, enquanto carnes e açúcar registraram crescimentos significativos, impulsionados por recordes de embarques e diversificação de mercados. Dentre os produtos exportados, o café solúvel se destaca, com um acumulado de US$ 792 milhões (R$ 4,8 bilhão) no período. Outro produto que chamou a atenção foi o óleo essencial de laranja, com mais de US$ 365 milhões (R$ 2,2 bilhões) em exportações até novembro de 2024. Esses resultados mostram como o agronegócio brasileiro vem ampliando horizontes, levando ao mundo uma variedade de produtos de alto valor agregado e reafirmando sua força em mercados cada vez mais diversificados.<h2>Importações em alta</h2>As importações de produtos agropecuários totalizaram US$ 1,54 bilhão (R$ 9,1 bilhões) em novembro de 2024, um aumento de 14,4% em relação ao mesmo período do ano anterior. Entre os principais itens importados estão trigo, com US$ 102,16 milhões (R$ 621 milhões), e salmões, US$ 76,05 milhões (456 milhões).<h2>Expectativas futuras</h2>De acordo com Luís Rua, secretário de Comércio e Relações Internacionais, os resultados da diversificação de mercados e produtos começam a aparecer de forma concreta na balança comercial. “Os produtos menos tradicionais da pauta exportadora incrementaram 7,2% em relação ao mesmo período do ano anterior. Com as boas perspectivas de safra para 2025, a continuidade das aberturas de novos mercados, a maturação comercial das aberturas já realizadas e a intensificação das ações de promoção comercial com uma série de novos instrumentos, esperamos ainda mais avanços qualitativos e quantitativos nas exportações do agronegócio brasileiro”, destacou em nota à imprensa.

By Lucianne Carneiro e Alessandra Saraiva — Do Rio The year 2023 marked a significant decline in poverty and extreme poverty in Brazil, reaching the lowest levels recorded since 2012, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). For the first time since 2012, the proportion of people living in poverty fell below 30%, reaching 27.4% of the population. Meanwhile, those in extreme poverty accounted for 4.4% of Brazilians, a figure that had never dropped below 5% before. The new IBGE report reveals a 14.7% decrease in poverty and a 24.6% drop in extreme poverty. Experts have described this reduction between 2022 and 2023 as pronounced, significant, and substantial. They attribute this trend to the vibrant job market, social programs like Bolsa Família and the Continuous Cash Benefit (BPC), and the real increase in the minimum wage. Researchers on the subject believe poverty will continue to decrease in 2024, but caution that much work remains. Despite the reduction in poverty, increased income, and social programs, a significant number of Brazilians remain impoverished, and income inequality persists in the country. “There is an improvement in the quality of life. This is the positive side, and it is not insignificant. Yet, various marks of inequality remain in income, access to work, education, and health. The inequality indices are very high,” said Francisco Menezes, a policy advisor at ActionAid. In 2023, 8.7 million people, equivalent to the entire population of the state of Ceará, emerged from poverty, yet 59 million Brazilians remained in this condition. The IBGE uses the World Bank’s poverty line as a reference, defined as a per capita household income of $6.85 per day (based on purchasing power parity, PPP) or R$665 per month. For extreme poverty, the population decreased from 12.6 million in 2022 to 9.5 million in 2023, meaning 3.1 million people moved out of this category last year. The extreme poverty line is set at a per capita household income below $2.15 PPP per day or R$209 per month. “Both the job market and social benefits help explain the reduction in poverty. The job market has a greater impact on poverty, while social benefits affect extreme poverty more,” said André Simões, an analyst at IBGE who co-authored this crucial study. While the decline in poverty was celebrated, the income inequality trend was less encouraging. The Gini index of per capita household income remained at 0.518 in 2023, the same level as in 2022, which is the lowest in the series since it began in 2012. The Gini index, a widely recognized measure of income inequality worldwide, ranges from 0 to 1, with values closer to 1 indicating greater inequality. In Brazil, in 2023, the total income held by the top 10% highest earners was 3.6 times greater than the income of the bottom 40% earners. According to the IBGE, maintaining this inequality indicator is likely due to the more dynamic job market in 2023, which had a stronger impact on the income of higher-income deciles, as they rely more on labor income. This inequality, according to the ActionAid Policy Advisor, justifies the discussion of a progressive tax reform targeting ultra-wealthy individuals: “We need to address the structural issues that explain poverty, which is more challenging due to the political process. However, even a slight taxation on the ultra-wealthy could generate significant resources to tackle issues such as the lack of basic sanitation.” In a period of intense debate over fiscal matters, Francisco Menezes argues that the discussion of public spending should focus on “the quality of resource allocation rather than merely the numbers.” The IBGE’s Summary of Social Indicators also includes data on the improvement of living conditions in Brazil. The proportion of young people aged 15 to 29 who neither study nor work decreased to 21.2% in 2023, down from 22.3% in 2022, the lowest level since 2012. Although the number of young people in this situation reached a record low, 10.3 million remain.

The initial projection was for a smaller increase of 9.1%, considering the low base of comparison of 2023. Last week, consultancies and sector associations interviewed for the report anticipated growth between 5% and 10%, depending on the study. In 2022 and 2023, the figures fell short of expectations. In 2021, sales in November dropped by 4.2%, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics’ retail survey. On Saturday (30), the acceleration was stronger, with a 22% increase compared to the same date in 2023, totaling R$1.93 billion in revenue. In terms of units, the increase was 21%. On Friday (29), the official Black Friday, online expansion reached 8.4%, aligning with market projections. The study was conducted in partnership with ClearSale. According to Valor’s calculations, the 2024 increase represents the highest rate of online expansion for a Black Friday since 2020, when the pandemic led consumers to shop online. This level of average spending includes segments such as fashion and food, which are less reliant on credit and less affected by recent interest rate hikes. Brick-and-mortar stores, which don’t always perform well even when digital sales soar during Black Friday, might have experienced a more optimistic season. According to Linx, a leading technology provider for the retail sector, fashion and footwear outlets saw a 13% increase during the promotional week. That happened after Asian platforms, such as Shein, were subject to a 20% import tax on items below $50, as per the law effective in August. On Friday, revenue growth reached 23%. The payment of the first installment of the 13th salary on Black Friday, a situation not seen since 2019, partially explains the performance in both physical and digital stores. Since the event’s inception in Brazil in 2010, the 13th salary was paid on Black Friday only in 2013, 2014, and 2019. Despite increased debt pressures on Brazilian budgets, consultants believe the stability in delinquency rates, household income gains, and the rise in formal employment in 2024 positively influenced the figures. According to the Central Bank, household credit delinquency over 12 months remains stable. The real average income rose by 7% from July to September. Former Casas Bahia and Carrefour executive Abel Ornelas emphasized the need to assess whether Black Friday was profitable. “The event costs are high, and it’s crucial to determine if they were covered or if there was a loss. Christmas will be the opportunity to capitalize and truly increase margins.” As Valor previously reported last week, there were signs of improving demand since the start of the month. The main market question is whether this momentum will continue into Christmas, as some consumers may have made early holiday shopping during Black Friday. Additionally, the potential risk of price increases due to a weaker real against the dollar, which could make goods ordered for sale more expensive, still looms.

New forests will be planted in municipalities in the Brazilian Amazon, creating direct and indirect jobs, strengthening the reforestation value chain in the region and in Brazil, and restoring some of the most degraded areas of the Amazon. The initiative aims to restore degraded areas in critical ecosystems, significantly impacting environmental conservation and sustainable development. Mombak’s operation focuses on the state of Pará, and planting will be conducted using native biodiverse species. This investment is a part of DFC’s growing portfolio of nature-based solutions, an area where the agency has established itself as an innovator. DFC has deployed its range of tools, from political risk insurance and loans to technical assistance and equity investments, into the sector. DFC is focusing on nature-based solutions as a key tool in ongoing work to sequester carbon, strengthen communities against the worst effects of climate change, and protect fragile ecosystems. Furthermore, through a model of rural partnerships with cattle ranchers, other degraded areas are also being restored in municipalities across Pará. Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said 40,000 people from G20 countries were expected to attend meetings and panels through Saturday in revamped warehouses of downtown Rio de Janeiro’s port area and nearby Museum of Tomorrow. The main summit takes place in Rio on Monday and Tuesday. Proposals developed at the social summit will be summarized in a final document to be presented at the leaders’ summit. Separately, representatives from Brazil’s low-income communities have also been gathering in Rio as part of an initiative called F20, and last week presented a joint statement outlining their priorities. These include combating inequality, promoting climate justice, improving access to sanitation and advancing digital and financial inclusion. These neighborhoods, popularly known as favelas, are home to 16.4 million Brazilians, or 8% of the country’s population, according to the government. And the challenges of favelas are evident in places like the mountainside Rio neighborhood of Rocinha, which recently reclaimed the title of most populous favela from another one outside the capital Brasilia. Brazil launches a G20 social summit to highlight needs of low-income people

That’s in part because Latin America’s biggest economy is the world’s second-largest producer of ethanol, which can be used to produce SAF,” Sousa and Couto reported. “Agriculture powerhouse Brazil has an abundance of cheap crops to make biofuels, providing the nation a leg up on competitors including the U.S. Many of Brazil’s supplies also rank better in terms of carbon emissions, key to meeting requirements for SAF production.” “SAF is one of the few pathways the aviation industry has at its disposal to curb its carbon footprint, which accounts for about 2.5% of global emissions. Interest in green jet fuel is picking up, driven by policy support, particularly in the European Union and the U.S., but demand far exceeds available supply and is forecast to continue growing,” Sousa and Couto reported. “Ricardo Mussa, chief executive officer of sugar and ethanol company Raizen SA, said Brazil’s ethanol production puts it in a strong position to be a major exporter of SAF.” ‘”For every liter of SAF, we need 1.7 liters of ethanol, so the best place to produce would be in the origin, in Brazil,’ Mussa said at Bloomberg New Economy at B20 in São Paulo last week,” according to Sousa and Couto’s reporting. “Production of green aviation fuel in Brazil has the potential to reach around 50 billion liters (13.2 billion gallons) by 2030 with further investments in agriculture, according to preliminary data from a study carried out by Airbus, LATAM Airlines Group SA and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,” Sousa and Couto reported. “That’s similar to the U.S.’s potential output, but Brazil is set to be a bigger exporter, with American production being consumed domestically.”.<h2>Brazil Already Shipping to U.S. SAF Plants</h2>Bloomberg’s Dayanne Sousa reported in April that “Brazilian company Raizen SA made the country’s first shipment of sugar-cane ethanol to be converted into green jet fuel in a U.S. plant, as competition heats up to supply the nascent market.”<h2>Why Brazil May Be a Leader</h2>Sousa and Couto reported that “companies and authorities in Brazil expect that SAF made from the country’s ethanol will be more effective than other crop-based alternatives. Industry Sees Brazil as Global Hub for Clean Jet Fuel

A planta será em Taubaté, no interior de São Paulo, cidade em que a Embraer já está instalada. O financiamento faz parte do programa BNDES Mais Inovação, que tem entre os objetivos fomentar projetos para mobilidade aérea urbana e na descarbonização da aviação. O acordo dá continuidade à parceria iniciada em 2022, quando o BNDES aprovou uma linha de crédito de R$ 490 milhões para o desenvolvimento do programa eVTOL. A nova operação combina subcréditos nacionais e internacionais, com parte dos recursos em moeda estrangeira, e será amortizada em até 16 anos. De acordo com Eduardo Couto, CFO da Eve, o financiamento aprimora a estrutura de capital, combinando ações e dívidas.A fábrica será estruturada em quatro fases, cada uma projetada para produzir 120 aeronaves, totalizando 480 eVTOLs por ano. Segundo a Eve, a abordagem modular permitirá que os investimentos acompanhem o crescimento do mercado. Atualmente, a empresa possui 2.900 cartas de intenção de compra de clientes em 13 países, representando um pipeline de receita potencial de US$ 14,5 bilhões. A BIP busca expandir e otimizar os investimentos de transição, de todas as fontes, em apoio ao Plano de Transformação Ecológica do governo em setores-chave, servindo de exemplo para outros países que buscam integrar suas transformações ecológicas e metas climáticas em pipelines de investimentos concretos. Atração de investimentos – O ministro da Fazenda, Fernando Haddad, afirmou que a plataforma é a realização de um ano e meio de iniciativas da pasta que abriram um novo horizonte para a agenda climática do Brasil. “É, portanto, a conclusão de um processo de estruturação de nossos marcos regulatórios e financeiros para investimentos verdes”, disse. “Da mesma forma, é o início de outro processo, de uma nova onda de investimentos”. Mobilizar capital internacional de transição é essencial para que o Brasil alcance suas metas ambiciosas de desenvolvimento e clima. Em 2023, o Brasil atualizou sua contribuição nacionalmente determinada (NDC) e suas ambições climáticas, com o objetivo de reduzir suas emissões em 53% até 2030, e potencial para se tornar a primeira nação do G20 a atingir o zero líquido enquanto cria empregos e espalha prosperidade. O país está finalizando suas metas de redução de emissões para 2035 atualmente. Em 2023, 9.533 companhias nacionais venderam produtos ao país norte-americano, e a maioria deles são itens de maior tecnologia. O levantamento mostrou ainda que as empresas que exportam aos EUA pagam melhores salários aos funcionários e empregam mais mulheres, na comparação com companhias que vendem a outros países. “Nunca na história tantas empresas exportaram para um único destino quanto exportaram no ano passado para os Estados Unidos”, diz Tatiana Prazeres, secretária de Comércio Exterior do MDIC. “Isso é algo que interessa porque ampliar a base exportadora do Brasil é um objetivo do governo federal”, prossegue. Em 2000, havia 4.664 empresas brasileiras exportando aos EUA. Em 2005, este número atingiu 8.023, mas houve queda nos anos seguintes, em parte por causa da crise financeira americana. A retomava veio a partir de 2013 e ganhou mais força nos últimos cinco anos, com crescimento contínuo desde 2018, até chegar aos atuais 9.953. Como comparação, 11.253 empresas brasileiras exportam para países do Mercosul, 8.498 para a União Europeia e 2.847 vendem para a China.<h2>200 anos de relações</h2>Neste ano, Brasil e EUA completam 200 anos de relações bilaterais. Em 2009, os Estados Unidos perderam o posto de maior importador de produtos brasileiros para a China, mas permanece como o maior comprador de produtos industrializados brasileiros e é o segundo maior parceiro comercial do país. Em 2023, os Estados Unidos compraram US$ 29,9 bilhões em produtos manufaturados brasileiros, como aeronaves, aço, máquinas para construção e mineração, motores e geradores. Além disso, o país exporta muito café em grão e suco de laranja aos EUA. “Os produtos cujas exportações brasileiras para os Estados Unidos mais cresceram de janeiro a agosto desse ano são café, celulose e carne, mas também aeronaves e máquinas de energia elétrica. Nos chama a atenção o crescimento em universos de produtos que são muito diferentes”, diz Prazeres. O estudo aponta ainda que empresas brasileiras que exportam aos Estados Unidos geram 3,2 milhões de empregos no Brasil, número 22,5% maior em relação a 2008. A remuneração média nestas empresas é de R$ 4.588 mensais, número 16,2% maior do que na comparação com a China.

Conducted in partnership with <a href="https://womenintheworkplace.com/" target="_blank">LeanIn.Org</a>, this effort is the largest study of women in corporate America. Over the past decade, more than 1,000 companies have participated in the study, and we have surveyed more than 480,000 people about their workplace experiences. For this year’s report, we collected information from 281 participating organizations that collectively employ more than ten million people. At these organizations, we surveyed more than 15,000 employees and more than 280 HR leaders, who shared insights on their policies and practices. The report provides an intersectional look at the specific biases and barriers faced by Asian, Black, Latina, and LGBTQ+ women, as well as women with disabilities. Our tenth-anniversary report analyzes data from the past decade to better understand progress, decline, and stagnation in women’s representation and experiences in the workplace. It also highlights key findings from 2024 and identifies the changes companies can make to chart real progress on the path to parity—which we project is nearly 50 years away. Over the past decade, women have made important gains at every level of the corporate pipeline (especially in senior leadership). Yet progress is surprisingly fragile, especially for women of color, who continue to be underrepresented at every level and who view gender and race as obstacles to their advancement. In many instances, we also see that women’s outlook and day-to-day experiences are not much different, or are even worse, than they were nearly a decade ago. A coalition of developed countries and corporations has agreed to a massive purchase of carbon credits from the Amazon rainforest worth $180 million, which has been described as the largest in history. The LEAF coalition, an initiative launched in 2021 seeking to mobilise finance for forest protection, announced the agreement this week with the Brazilian state of Pará. The state, which will host the COP30 climate summit next year in the city of Belém, last year recorded the highest Amazonian deforestation rate in the country. Around 170,000 sq. km, an area the size of Uruguay, was destroyed. Announcing the carbon credit initiative in New York, Pará State Governor Helder Barbalho told international press that the deal – which allocates a portion of the funds to indigenous and local communities – is “extraordinary”. “It will be the largest carbon credit sale in history,” Barbalho said in a statement. “We dream of making living forests valuable, turning what dead forests need into a reality where the forest gains value.”<h2>Funds for rainforests</h2>Around 30 multinational corporations including Amazon, Bayer, BCG and H&amp;M Group will purchase the credits from the project at $15 per tonne. The governments of the UK, US, Norway and South Korea will also back the deal with purchase guarantees, promising to buy a chunk of the credits at $15 per tonne if no private-sector buyer is found for them. LEAF expects to generate around 12 million forest credits by reducing deforestation in Pará from 2023 to 2026. The coalition has already established smaller projects in Costa Rica and Ghana, which sold credits at a lower price of $10 per tonne.<h2>Close monitoring</h2>If successful, the LEAF Pará initiative could become a “role model” for forest protection in the Amazon, but this will require evidence that it is changing the state’s emissions trajectory, said Mariana Oliveira, manager of the Forests, Land Use and Agriculture Program at WRI Brasil. “Given the nature and structure of the transaction, it will be necessary to closely watch the interventions to be sure that there is a link between the revenue from carbon credits and the interventions,” Oliveira told Climate Home News. Since 2020, Pará state – the second-largest in the Brazilian Amazon – has committed to an emissions reduction strategy aiming to restore around 5 million hectares of forests and achieving net-zero forest emissions by 2036. The state has also put in place a mandatory tracking system for all cattle and buffalo supply chains. After a slight rise in 2021, Pará’s deforestation fell in 2022 and 2023.

Juntas, as primeiras seis instituições selecionadas para serem revitalizadas – cinco escolas infantis de Porto Alegre e uma ONG de Taquara, no Vale do Paranhana – atendem mais de 1,2 mil crianças. “Estamos trabalhando para criar ambientes mais seguros e acolhedores, transformando esses espaços que foram danificados pelas enchentes em refúgios de esperança”, destaca a arquiteta e diretora operacional dos Arquitetos Voluntários, Bianca Russo. Em Porto Alegre, o grupo já está atuando na Escola Marista Menino Jesus (bairro Floresta), no Centro de Educação São Vicente de Paulo (São Geraldo) e nas Escolas de Educação Infantil Vitória (Humaitá), Mário Frigo (Farrapos) e Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes (São Geraldo). Em Taquara, o grupo trabalha na revitalização da sede da ONG Vida Breve, que oferece oficinas de arte, cultura e educação para crianças e jovens. Antes, as empresas podiam explorar o mercado brasileiro, mas não podiam estar no país.<h2>Licença</h2>A Lei 14790, de 29 de dezembro de 2023, estabeleceu impostos e uma taxa de 12% sobre o faturamento das bets. O valor da licença é de R$ 30 milhões e permite a exploração do mercado por cinco anos, com até três marcas diferentes por empresa.O governo vai arrecadar, a partir de 2025, com cerca de 100 empresas já cadastradas, um valor estimado em mais de R$ 3 bilhões. Segundo especialistas, a cobrança irá gerar receita relevante das bets que hoje vai tanto para o bolso dos empresários quanto para os investimentos em marketing. A expectativa é de que o mercado passe a se profissionalizar.<h2>Multas</h2>A multa para quem explorar o mercado brasilero sem o pagamento da outorga é pesado: R$ 2 bilhões. A barreira de entrada financeira para o mercado nacional foi imposta pela Secretaria de Prêmios e Apostas do Ministério da Fazenda em maio deste ano. As empresas têm até 31 de dezembro de 2024 para se adequarem às novas regras. Também será preciso ter R$ 5 milhões de garantia em caixa.

It has invested some 300 million reais ($53.58 million) over the past year to get new aircraft and enhance distribution centers, Koga told Reuters. <h2>Expansion</h2>Modern, whose main hub is the Viracopos airport near Sao Paulo, started flying to Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina and Uruguay in August and aims to enter Mexico and the U.S. in 2025. The ongoing expansion, whose first phase was organic, includes possible mergers or acquisitions both in Brazil and abroad in the next 18 to 24 months, Koga said. An initial public offering (IPO) or strategic merger could be ultimate goals but would depend on market conditions. <h2>Additional Context</h2>The size of Brazil’s freight and logistics market is estimated at $105.5 billion and expected to reach $140.7 billion by 2030, according to research firm Mordor Intelligence. Other major logistic operators there include the cargo divisions of traditional airlines Azul, LATAM (LTM.SN) and Gol (GOLL4.SA), as well as Total, Jadlog and Braspress. The goal? To improve access to digital services, enhance economic growth, and promote social inclusion. Recent initiatives highlight the country’s commitment to building a robust digital ecosystem, leveraging technologies to streamline government services and empower its citizens.<h2>Expanding digital identity</h2>At the heart of Brazil’s digital transformation is the <a href="https://www.gov.br/governodigital/pt-br/identidade/conta-gov-br" target="_blank">Gov.br</a> platform, a digital identity system that enables citizens to access a range of government services online. The platform provides a single sign-on offering that consolidates various government services into a unified digital identity, with the aim of simplifying the interaction between the government and its citizens. According to a report by CSIS, it was developed to unify the ID systems of Brazil’s 27 states and ensure their interoperability, as well as to streamline other identification processes. Tariq Malik, technical advisor digital public infrastructure, digital ID ID4D at the World Bank, recently highlights Brazil’s achievements on <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/posts/tariqmalik1_dpi-brazil-legalid-activity-7233924219422564353-whX-/" target="_blank">LinkedIn</a>, noting: “With impressive registration rates exceeding 90 percent for adults and 98 percent for children under 5, Brazil has achieved remarkable milestones in population registration through its Legal ID and Digital ID initiatives.” To support its DPI goals, the Brazilian government has recently introduced a new legal framework through <a href="https://www-planalto-gov-br.translate.goog/ccivil_03/_ato2023-2026/2024/decreto/D12069.htm?_x_tr_sl=pt&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=pt-BR&amp;_x_tr_pto=wapp" target="_blank">Decree No. 12,069</a> that outlines the objectives for the country’s digital transformation, emphasizing the need for interoperability, data protection, and cybersecurity. It provides a regulatory basis for the Gov.br platform and other digital public infrastructure initiatives, in a bid to ensure that these systems operate in accordance with international best practices.<h2>Brazil’s role in the digital landscape</h2>Brazil’s efforts to enhance its digital public infrastructure are not just focused on domestic benefits. The country is positioning itself as a leader in digital transformation within the Global South. The CSIS report suggests that Brazil is setting an example for other developing countries by building inclusive and resilient digital ecosystems. Brazil’s approach to digital transformation also comes as the country prepares to host the upcoming <a href="https://www.donorplatform.org/event/g20-brazil-2024-summit/" target="_blank">G20 summit</a> on November 18th and 19th, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro. The country declared DPI as one of the four priorities of the G20 digital economy working group, a report by Brookings suggests. This presents an opportunity for the country to showcase its digital achievements and advocate for a global consensus on digital governance and data management.

O projeto também cria programas nacionais de diesel verde, de combustível sustentável para aviação, além de prever um aumento da mistura de etanol anidro na gasolina e de biodiesel no diesel fóssil, dentre outras iniciativas.No entanto, como sofreu alterações, o texto ainda terá de retornar para nova votação na Câmara, antes de seguir para sanção presidencial. Apresentada pelo Ministério de Minas e Energia (MME) e já aprovada pelos deputados, a proposta representa um avanço significativo nas políticas de incentivo ao uso de combustíveis renováveis e busca promover uma matriz energética mais sustentável no Brasil.<h2>Mistura no combustível</h2>A medida estabelece ainda novos percentuais mínimos e máximos para a mistura do etanol à gasolina C e do biodiesel ao diesel, vendidos aos consumidores em postos do país. Já em relação ao bioemetano, ficou estabelecido que o Conselho Nacional de Política Energética (CNPE) definirá metas anuais para incentivar o uso do insumo pelo setor de gás natural. As metas de redução de gases de efeito estufa pelo setor entrarão em vigor em janeiro de 2026, com valor inicial de 1% e não poderá ultrapassar 10%.<h2>Diesel verde</h2>No caso do diesel verde, o CNPE fixará, a cada ano, a quantidade mínima a ser adicionado ao diesel vendido ao consumidor final. Inicialmente essa quantidade mínima seria fixada pelo CNPE somente até 2037. O diesel verde ainda não é produzido no Brasil. Apesar de também ser obtido a partir de óleos ou gorduras, pode ser utilizado em motores do ciclo diesel sem adaptações.

No ano passado, os consulados americanos carimbaram o passaporte de 1,1 milhão de visitantes do Brasil. No primeiro semestre deste ano, foram 675 mil vistos — alta de 17% na comparação com o mesmo período de 2023. “Estamos comprometidos em tornar [esse processo] mais rápido e eficiente”, disse a embaixadora, mencionando ações como aumento dos funcionários consulares e renovações de vistos sem a necessidade de entrevistas. Ela falou também sobre a crescente rivalidade geopolítica entre EUA e China, deixando claro um ponto: “Não estamos pedindo que o Brasil, ou qualquer outro país, escolha [entre um e outro]”.
