Group Dot BR presents The Passion According to Janair

The Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce is honored to showcase this extraordinary production presented by Group Dot BR, New York’s only Brazilian theater company. The Passion According to Janair brings a powerful and thought-provoking reinterpretation of Clarice Lispector’s iconic work to the stage, celebrating Brazilian culture and artistic excellence in New York City.

The Passion According to Janair is a striking reimagining of Clarice Lispector’s novel The Passion According to G.H.. In Lispector’s book, Janair—the Black maid whose quiet departure triggers the protagonist’s existential unraveling—remains a shadow, a muted trace, a removed presence. This new production reclaims that void, placing Janair at the center of the stage as the story’s beating heart.

Portrayed by acclaimed Brazilian actress Ana Carbatti under the direction of Andressa Furletti, Janair steps forward from the edges of the narrative, speaking directly to audiences. Through her, the play not only revisits Lispector’s metaphysical questions but expands them, turning a sidelined presence into testimony and quietude into resonance. In doing so, Group Dot BR – NY’s only Brazilian Theater Company – draws attention to the unspoken realities of invisible labor, racial hierarchies, and the solitude of those long overlooked.
